I’ve been experimenting with gift economy, as shared by the wonderful Genevieve Vaughan, for a few years now. Her conceptualization of how a healthy society orients to resources is a profound example of nonviolence in action.
One key learning for me over the past two years is that many of us have a relationship with money that’s based in scarcity, and this blunts our ability to accurately assess our own needs as well as the needs of others when it comes to offering and asking for financial resources. The result of this is that generally speaking, when I don’t insist on receiving a certain amount of money for my support offerings, less money flows to me than I need, even though many of the people who I support have more access to financial resources than I do.
When people offer me money outside the context of receiving direct support from me, it really, really helps my life to function more smoothly, allowing me to put more of my energy into sharing my work.
If you’d like to free me up to offer more of myself to the world, and you have the ability to offer me money, I gratefully accept your gift.
